Art historian and author of “What is 'Islamic' Art?: Between Religion and Perception”, Wendy Shaw talks to us about whether art can truly be "Islamic" or "theological", and if so, what that means. We talk about the complex ways in which museums interact with the broader economies and what this means for decolonizing the field of art history, and her roundabout journey into this field all the way from biochemistry.
Wendy Shaw is an art historian and professor of the Art History of Islamic Cultures at the Freie Universität berlin. Her book "What is 'Islamic' Art?: Between Religion and Perception" explores the perceptions of arts, including painting, music and geometry through the discursive sphere of historical Islam including the Qur'an, Hadith, Sufism, ancient philosophy, and poetry. By emphasizing the experience of reception over the context of production, Shaw creates a new approach not only to Islam and its arts, but also as a decolonizing model for global approaches to art history.
